Neid und Missgunst sind keinem Künstler würdig.
Vor Jahren reklamierte Rudy Coby, ein US-Künstler aus den 90ern eine Verletzung seiner Urheberrechte an einer Nummer der Ehrlich Brothers. Rasch stellte sich heraus: Es ging um einen uralten Zirkusgag, den schon Karl Valentin in den 1920er-Jahren nutzte und der zur damaligen Zeit populär war. Die Sache war erledigt. Aber auch in Varietés Englands wurde die Beinillusion zu sehen. Der amerikanische Zauberkünstler un anerkannte Experte Peter Biro schrieb darüber bereits im Genii forum:

Die Rolf Harris version dürfte ursprünglich gestanden sein, und vor Rudy Coby zeigte seine Version, Bob Swalding zeigte einen Act mit 3 Beinen. Rudy Coby der Erfinder des Effekts? Längst widerlegt denn er hat die Nummer selbst von jemand anderem „entliehen“. Wie schon gesagt ein alter und populärer Act.
Nun aber gräbt Rudy Coby die alte Geschichte wieder aus. Auf Social Media bezeichnet er die Ehrlichs als „Copycats“ und spottet über angeblich schlechte Ticketverkäufe ihrer bevorstehenden USA-Tour. Damit verbreitet er wider besseres Wissen falsche Vorwürfe und wünscht Kollegen offen den Misserfolg – ein Verhalten, das eines Künstlers nicht würdig ist. Dass auch Freund Richard Kaufmann nun in den Chor der Missgünstlinge einstimmt, zeigt die aufgeheizte Stimmung die in den USA herrscht, wo Internet und Soziale Medien inzwischen vielfach verwendet werden um seinen Frust auszuleben.
Die Fakten: Die Ehrlich Brothers haben Europas erfolgreichste Illusionsshow aller Zeiten geschaffen, zahlreiche originelle Routinen entwickelt und wurden zuletzt vom Magic Circle London mit dem David Devant Award ausgezeichnet. Ihr Schritt in die USA ist mutig und konsequent – ob erfolgreich, wird sich langfristig zeigen. Inzwischen sind die Shows aber sehr gut vorverkauf. Wer sich das Programm anschaut und sich ein wenig mit Zauberkunst beschäftigt wird feststellen, dass es kaum große Illusionsshows gibt die so viel eigene Originaleffekte beinhalten.
Rudy Coby hat eine interessante Präsentation dieser alten Illusion als Wissenschaftler gefunden, Die Ehrlich Brothers kombinieren es mit anderen Illusionen, Axel Adler hat eine eigene Version geschaffen. Sie alle benutzen historische Ideen. Das ist es was Zauberkunst lebendig erhält. Wir stehen auf den Schultern von Großen.
Missgunst und falsche Behauptungen gehören nicht dazu. So cool Rudy Coby einst auftrat – so bitter wirkt heute seine Missgunst.
Envy on Four Legs – Rudy Coby’s Attack on the Ehrlich Brothers
Envy and resentment are not worthy of any true artist.
Years ago, Rudy Coby – a U.S. magician popular in the 1990s – claimed the Ehrlich Brothers had infringed on one of his creations. It quickly turned out that the routine in question was an old circus gag, already performed by other Artists also by Karl Valentin the famous Munich comedian in the 1920s. But also in Vaudeville acts from England the illusion was seen. The American magician and expert Peter Biro wrote in Genii forum:
Sorry, this isn’t Rudy Coby’s act. The leg bit is a very old English music hall routine. I’ll do some digging to find out who was first. The Rolf Harris version is tops. Now, however, he is digging up the same false story. On social media, he labels the Ehrlich Brothers “copycats” and mocks their upcoming U.S. tour, sneering at supposed weak ticket sales. By doing so, he knowingly spreads misinformation and openly wishes fellow artists failure – a stance unworthy of a professional. Coby friend Richard Kaufmann also try to assist Rudy with false and unfair comments.
The facts are clear: the Ehrlich Brothers have created the most successful illusion show in European history, developed numerous original routines, and were recently honored by the Magic Circle London with the prestigious David Devant Award. Their U.S. venture is bold and ambitious – and its success will be judged only after the tour. In the meantime the shows are good sold and when people with some knowledge will visit the show the will see that there are view Shows were you can see so many original Illusons created by the performers.
Rudy Coby has found an interesting presentation of this old illusion as Labman, and the Ehrlich Brothers combine it with other illusions. Axel Adler did an faszinating version of this old idea. They all use historical ideas. That’s what keeps magic alive. We stand on the shoulders of giants.

By the way, this Leg Gag was used in a clip from Liberace and aired in USA television. I am wondering if Rudy coby has any permission for this act which is not as was never his invention.
Resentment and false claims have no place here. As cool as Rudy Coby once appeared, his resentment seems bitter today.

Bereits Anfang der 1970ér Jahre gab es im ZDF (entweder in den Sendungen der Reihe „Circus-Circus“ oder in einer der Folgen von Varieté-Varieté, kann mich leider nicht mehr genau daran erinnern) eine Comedynummer mit drei oder vier Beinen. Also ein wirklich alter Hut, wie ja auch schon andere feststellten. Aber auch in uralten S/W-Filmen konnte man diesen sogenannten „Clowngag“ sehen.
The quoted bits from Johannes Engel’s „Astrolabium planum“ are not correct. The images seem to have been assembled from different pages to create a false narrative. They actually illustrate various idioms and sayings, in relation to astrological predictions.
The multi-legged man is on page 173 in „Astrolabium planum“, and its caption says:
Vir quatuor habens pedes stans ociosus“ – „A man having four feet standing idle“
And the man holding a leg is on page 179 with the caption;
Vir manu sua pede tenens amputauit“ – „A man who has cut off, holding with his hand his foot“
And next to them are images and captions like „Defator regis erit“ („He will be a betrayer of the king“ ), „Simea cernens se in speculo“ („An ape seeing itself in a mirror“ ) et cetera. There are no mention of references to magicians or jugglers.
I don’t know who assembled these things into a fake narrative, but it did not happen by accident – they *knew* it was false.

My point is not to start a discussion about were independent developments of an effect starts. The way, Ruby Coby about bashing the ehrlich brothers in a very unfair way, is my main point. There were many possibilities to protect his rights, but he has no obvious no option. Don’t think it’s fair to behave like he does. Ganz, ganz traurig, wenn ein ehemals erfolgreicher Illusionist wie Rudy Coby zu aktuell erfolgreichen Kollegen wie den Ehrlich-Brothers solche Äußerungen macht. Wie tief muss man gesunken sein, dass man sich zu solchen „Beschuldigungen“ hinreißen lässt!
Mir ist absolut unverständlich, dass man sich wagt, mit der Kenntnis des historischen Hintergrunds mit einer solchen haltlosen und mehr als billigen Kritik zu Unrecht an kreative und überall vom Publikum umjubelten Stars wie den Ehrlich-Brothers heranzutreten.
Was bezweckt Rudy Coby damit?
Denkt er, dadurch seinen Namen nochmal kurz ins Gespräch zu bringen? Wenn er das wirklich beabsichtigt, dann hat er das tatsächlich geschafft. Allerdings sicher nicht in seinem Sinne! Denn mit seinem Verhalten blamiert er sich auf voller Linie. Man kann bestenfalls nur noch Mitleid mit ihm haben. Für den selbsternannten „coolsten Magician on Earth“ eine ziemlich uncoole Aktion! Es muss tragisch für ihn sein, keine bedeutenden aktuellen Erfolge mehr zu haben. 2012 versuchte er ein Comeback in der Sendung „America’s Got Talent“, schied meiner Erinnerung nach aber bereits im Viertelfinale wieder aus!
Wenn Rudy Coby nicht nur cool sondern auch klug sein möchte, dann sollte er zur Einsicht kommen und seine unwahren Behauptungen in den sozialen Medien besser löschen. Denn das Schlimmste, was ihm ansonsten passieren könnte, würde er sicher nicht wollen: Dass von den Lesern nämlich weltweit bemerkt wird, dass er im Vergleich zu den Ehrlich Brothers ein nur ganz kleines Licht darstellte und seine Flamme längst erloschen ist, er sie aber nochmal um jeden Preis – und mögen Cobys Methoden noch so geschmacklos sein – aufflackern lassen will.
Wer nun denkt, der mutmaßliche Neid von Ruby Coby sei ein Einzelfall, der irrt. Auch in Deutschland gibt es missgünstige Kollegen, die den Ehrlich Brothers ihren Erfolg nicht gönnen. So sagte mir mal jemand von einem ehemaligen Illusionisten-Duo: „Die haben uns unsere Ernte gestohlen. WIR müssten eigentlich den wohlverdienten Erfolg haben und an deren Stelle stehen!“
